Welcome to The Ecotoxicology Lab!

Ecotoxicology and Environmental Forensics research group is focused on conducting high quality research on chemical contaminants such as biocides, , persistent organic pollutants (industrial chemicals, PAH, PCBs, pesticides), trace elements and heavy metals in a variety of species of concern including invertebrates, fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals. We study the mechanism of toxic effects and develop novel bioassay methods to explore bioactive/toxic contaminants in the development of safe limits relevant for regulatory bodies within and outside Nigeria. We also conduct ecological modelling and forensic studies with the aim of unmasking the dynamics and patterns of hazardous chemical pollutants. We attempt to understand the molecular mechanisms underlying species-specific responses and susceptibility to chemical exposure, focusing on the functions of xenobiotic metabolizing enzymes. On a broader sense, we evaluate the impact of pollution on ecosystem services in other to achieve balance in ecosystem functioning.

CAPABILITIES:

The research team is comprised of specialised and technically competent scientists with broad research experience and capabilities. The laboratory is well equipped with the following: Atomic Absorption Spectrophometer (AAS), High Performance Liquid Chromatograph (HPLC), Gas Chromatograph (GC), UV Flame Spectrophotometer, Rotary Evaporator, Oven, Sonicator, Freeze Dryer, Real Time PCR etc. We can deliver ecotoxicology studies on a broad range of analysis as well as provide expert advice, insight and guidance to various industrial sectors, including oil and gas, nuclear energy, veterinary medicine, chemical manufacturers/suppliers, water industry, emergency response agencies and other relevant government establishments. Our ecotoxicology team have the experience and expertise to offer a broad range of acute and chronic ecotoxicology studies and related services. We have a proven track record of providing regulatory testing, including the delivery of marine, freshwater and sediment testing in line with Good Laboratory Practice (GLP)

OUR VISION

To be a centre of excellence for research and development in ecotoxicology and environmental forensics science, regionally and internationally.
